Chapter Seven

“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t make it in today, Richard.” Daniel Romanos greeted him Monday as he entered the opulent lobby of the building where the company’s offices were housed.

“Daniel.” Richard automatically glanced behind the man, looking for Maggie, even though he knew the chances of running into her in the lobby at one o’clock in the afternoon were very small. But even so, he still found himself keeping an eye out for her. The kiss they’d shared on Saturday night had left him both uncomfortably aware of her and longing for more. Much more.

When a problem with one of his French subsidiaries had mushroomed into a potential disaster early Sunday morning, it had taken all his willpower not to drop the problem in Daniel’s hands and call Maggie instead. The very strength of the desire he’d felt to do just that was what had stopped him. He intended for her to be his companion for the six weeks he’d be in New York, but he refused to allow her to interfere with what was really important: his work.

“Did you clear up the problem in France?” Daniel asked.

“Yes, it’s taken care of. For the time being, at least. I’m beginning to think that Faberge isn’t up to running things over there. Keep an eye on his performance, would you?”

“Sure, I’ll make a note of it. I thought I’d give you a quick rundown on the situation here on the way up to the office,” Daniel told him as they entered the empty elevator.

“Does that computer expert have anything to report yet?”

“All I know for a fact is that he’s been here since Saturday afternoon. I sent for him when you called to say you were on your way in. He’s waiting for you in your office.”

“So what’s the mood in the place this morning?” Richard asked.

“Sullen with homicidal overtones,” Daniel said grimly. “If I were you, Richard, I’d think twice about drinking any coffee that Emily Adams, Moore’s previous secretary, gives you.”

“Hmm.” Richard remembered Maggie’s comment about how the secretary had hated him so much she wouldn’t even deliver a package to his apartment.

“Once they realize that I have no intention of closing down the firm, things will settle down.”

Daniel grimaced. “I don’t think it’s going to be that simple. From what I can gather, the crux of their dislike is the fact that you fired Moore. Apparently, he was very popular with everyone from the janitor to the vice president.”

“Maybe he was popular because he was sharing the millions he embezzled!”

Daniel shrugged. “Maybe, and maybe he was just one of those charismatic guys that everyone liked. From everything I’ve seen, he was one helluva salesman, and great salesmen are usually likable guys.”

Maggie had certainly liked Moore, Richard remembered uneasily.

“Of course, if I were to discreetly leak what he did…” Daniel suggested.

“Forget it.” Richard shoved his long fingers through his thick hair. “One of the conditions when we bought the company from his mother-in-law was that we’d keep our mouths shut about both Moore’s embezzlement and his gambling.
